They receive comprehensive training, including in cosmetic and laser dermatology, Mohs micrographic surgery, pediatric dermatology, and dermatopathology. Some dermatologists choose to supervise mid-level practioners like Nurse Practitioners and Physician's Assistants to extend the reach of the Dermatologist. You can identify a Board-Certified Dermatologist by looking for the F.A.A.D. at the end of their name, signifying that they are Fellows of the American Academy of Dermatology. What is a dermatologist?
Mohs surgery, radiation, excisions, and more
There are several types of skin cancer, all of which have unique considerations for best treatment depending on a variety of factors: size, location, microscopic features, and age.
Mohs micrographic surgery offers the best clearance of skin cancer while preserving the maximum amount of tissue prior to reconstruction. Mohs surgery is a specialized technique performed by a dermatologist.
Excisions, radiation, and electrodessication are other effective treatment options used for skin cancer that's not appropriate for Mohs surgery.
