A Mohs Surgeon's Take on Bemotrizinol, the First New U.S. Sunscreen Filter in a Generation

NEW YORK — August 12, 2026 — As of last week, American sunscreen manufacturers can legally use an ultraviolet filter that consumers in Europe and Asia have had access to since 1999. The FDA added bemotrizinol to the over-the-counter sunscreen monograph on June 9, and the ingredient became available for use in U.S. formulations on August 9.

It is the first new sunscreen active ingredient approved in the United States in roughly a quarter century.

Dr. Dennis Porto, a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon, says the significance is less about the chemistry than about what the chemistry makes possible.

"I remove skin cancers for a living. Every single one of them represents a prevention failure somewhere upstream — sometimes decades upstream. So anything that makes daily sun protection easier or more pleasant is not a cosmetic upgrade to me. It's upstream cancer prevention."

What bemotrizinol actually does

Bemotrizinol — also called BEMT, and sold under the trade names Tinosorb S and Parsol Shield — is a chemical filter that absorbs across both the UVA and UVB ranges. That dual coverage is the point.

Most older American chemical filters were built primarily around UVB, the wavelength responsible for sunburn. UVA penetrates more deeply, drives photoaging, and contributes meaningfully to skin cancer risk without producing the immediate visible warning of a burn.

"Sunburn is a terrible smoke detector. It only alarms for UVB. Patients tell me they never burn, and they say it like it's a clean bill of health — but the UVA exposure has been accumulating in their dermis the entire time. That's the damage I'm operating on twenty years later."

Bemotrizinol is also notably photostable, meaning it degrades slowly under sun exposure rather than breaking down within the first hour. Data submitted to the FDA supported its safety at concentrations up to 6%, with minimal systemic absorption.

The formulation problem this may solve

Dr. Porto argues the most underrated benefit has nothing to do with the filter's protective ceiling.

"The best sunscreen in the world is the one sitting unused in your bathroom cabinet, and it protects exactly nobody. I have spent years telling patients with darker skin tones to wear mineral sunscreen while knowing full well that most of what's on the shelf will leave them looking ashy. That is not a trivial complaint. That is the reason the bottle stays in the cabinet."

Because bemotrizinol can be combined with zinc oxide while allowing lighter, more elegant textures, formulators have more room to build products that people will actually apply — and reapply — without a visible white cast.

"Adherence is the whole ballgame. An SPF 30 that someone genuinely enjoys wearing every morning outperforms an SPF 50 they use twice a summer. We have spent too long optimizing the number on the bottle and not enough time optimizing whether anyone wants to put it on their face."

What this doesn't change

Dr. Porto is careful to frame the approval as incremental rather than transformative.

"A new filter doesn't repeal the basics. Shade, clothing, hats, and timing still do more work than any bottle. And nobody should throw out a sunscreen they like and use consistently just because something new arrived on the shelf. The sunscreen you're already wearing is doing its job."

He also notes the timeline is longer than the headlines suggest. Because of an 18-month exclusivity period attached to the approval, bemotrizinol will initially appear only in one manufacturer's formulations before entering the broader market.

"This has been used safely overseas for over two decades, so I'm not anxious about it. But I'd also tell patients not to go hunting for it as though it's a cure. It's a good ingredient joining a category that already had good options. That's progress, not revolution."

The bigger regulatory story

The approval moved through a pathway established by the CARES Act, designed to modernize how the FDA evaluates over-the-counter drug ingredients. Bemotrizinol is the first ingredient to complete that route.

"The interesting part isn't this molecule. It's that a functioning pathway now exists. American consumers have been a generation behind on UV filter technology because our regulatory framework treated sunscreens as drugs while much of the world treated them as cosmetics. If this pathway keeps working, bemotrizinol won't be the last."
